Football and Volleyball Teams Continue Successful Seasons

On Friday evening, the UNH women’s volleyball team, ranked number 1 in the NCAA East Region, completed its fifth-consecutive perfect Northeast-10 regular season with a win over visiting Bentley. The victory extended the Chargers’ winning streak to 21 matches.

The team is the number 1 seed in the NE-10 conference tournament and will host eighth-seeded Stonehill on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Charger Gymnasium.

The Chargers wrapped up the regular season at 24-1 overall and 15-0 in the Northeast-10. The Chargers needed just 51 sets to complete their perfect conference record, breaking their own record of 52 sets in 2009.  New Haven has won all 74 of its regular season NE-10 contests since joining the conference in 2008.

Volleyball team hosts Stonehill on Tuesday in the first round of the Northeast-10 Confernece tournament.

The women’s volleyball team isn’t the only fall sports team having an impressive season.

On Saturday, the football team won the inaugural NE-10 Conference championship game. The Chargers defeated American International College, 37-12. (Read the New Haven Register recap or view a photo gallery.) With the win, the Chargers captured their third consecutive NE-10 Championship.

On Sunday, the Chargers earned their second-straight berth in the NCAA Division II tournament. The Chargers are seeded number 2 in Super Regional One. The team receives a bye in the first round and will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 24, to host the winner of Indiana (PA) and Shepherd in the second round. Kickoff is set for noon.

The football team, ranked third in the most recent AFCA Coaches’ Poll, finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record and an 9-0 mark in the NE-10.

Head football coach Pete Rossomando is a nominee for Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year. Liberty Mutual, in partnership with the College Football Hall of Fame, provides fans an opportunity to vote for their teams’ leaders at Sports fans can vote online daily through Tuesday, Nov. 30. Last year, Coach Rossomando was a finalist for Coach of the Year honors in Division II.
