Dave LeBlanc ’90, a lieutenant with the Harwich, Mass., Fire Department, wrote a guest blog entry, “Why Everyone Goes Home Doesn’t Always Mean ‘Everyone Goes Home’” for the Backstep Firefighter blog.

He comments on how firefighters will have different perspectives on what it means to risk “a lot” for “a little” depending on their life experience. He also reflects on what it might take to decrease the number of deaths in the line of duty and the importance of taking time to prepare for the job. Reducing the risks starts with the individual, he writes. “Get in shape and stay in shape. From there we have to train. Train as if your life depends on it, because it does. But more importantly, train as if your crew’s lives depend on it, because they do too.”

Leblanc worked full time with the Dennis Fire Department while pursuing his B.S. in arson investigation at UNH. Read the blog entry>>
