Disability Awareness Day: “Disable the Label”

UNH will sponsor “Disable the Label,” on Monday, April 15, to increase awareness of disabilities. The theme of the event is “ConnectAbility.” There will be guest speakers, hands-on activities and information stations throughout the day. Participants can enter a raffle for each event attended throughout the day.

The grand prize is a $100 prepaid MasterCard. Other prizes include and iPod/iPhone home station; gift baskets; prepaid MasterCard gift cards, PlayStation network cards; Darden gift cards to Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Longhorn Steakhouse; Xbox/Microsoft point cards; and Starbucks and iTunes gift cards. 

Schedule of Events

9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Information stations and hands-on activities to learn about different disabilities
Locations: Bartels Hall, Bartels Hall Patio and in front of the Beckerman Recreation Center.

9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Northeast Passage will be hosting an adaptive sports demonstration.

9:30-10:30 a.m. and 3-4 p.m.
Disability etiquette training video followed by Q&A
Location: Alumni Lounge

11 a.m. – Noon Country music artist and UNH graduate Shane Michael Taylor ‘05 will offer a motivational speech to encourage success in college and show how individuals with disabilities can be successful.

12:30-1:30 p.m. The “Free At Last Players” theater group will present skits, poems and readings related to mental health-related topics.

2-3 p.m. Actress, singer and songwriter Rachel Handler will present “Opportunities in Adversity,” in which she will demonstrate how anyone can fall into a disability at any moment and how they can find opportunity if that should occur.

4-5 p.m. Disability Awareness Jeopardy game competition

5:15 p.m. Prizes will be drawn.
