“Using LaTeX for Publication and Office Use”

The Friends of the UNH Library will begin a fall semester lecture series with a talk by Joseph Kolibal, professor of mathematics, on Thursday, Sept. 26, titled “Using LaTeX for Publication and Office Use.” The discussion will begin at 2 p.m. in the upper level of the Peterson Library.

While not as popular as Microsoft Word for producing electronic documents, LaTeX, Kolibal argues, is a far more sophisticated and complete electronic photo-typography software tool than any other commercial package, providing writers an opportunity to typeset publication quality text.

Kolibal will provide a short introduction to LaTeX and discuss its features, demonstrating its use in writing a letter, a syllabus and a dissertation document. He will also show how it can be used to create some glossy promotional literature. The best part of LaTeX, he says, is that it is open source and runs on every platform.

Kolibal has been chair of the Department of Mathematics and Physics at UNH since 2012. Previously, he was at the University of Southern Mississippi from 1993 to 2012. He has a Ph.D. in mathematics from Oxford University.

He has worked as a chemical engineer and nuclear engineer at Pratt and Whitney and at the Plasma Physics Lab at Princeton.
