Common Read Discussion: Identity Mash Up

Common Read Discussion: Identity Mash Up

As part of an ongoing series of events related to the 2013-14 common read selection of When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka, the Psychology/Sociology Department and Psychology Club will present a discussion, “Identity Mash Up,” led by professors Patrick McGrady, Rachel Torello and Melissa Whitson. The event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. in Meeting Rooms A&B in Bartels Hall.

As detailed in When the Emperor was Divine, a group of Americans were set apart in an instant. Faced with the challenge of forced new identities, Japanese-Americans experienced a disconnect between how they saw themselves and how others saw them. The discussion will explore the everyday forms of this experience from multiple angles.
