Current Issues Discussion: Affordable Healthcare Act

The Current Issues Discussion Committee will host an event on Thursday, Nov. 21, that will explore healthcare reform efforts in the United States and the Affordable Care Act. It will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Moulton Lounge in Bartels Hall.

The discussion will be led by Summer McGee, associate professor of management and public health expert. She will discuss the implications of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, dubbed “Obamacare.”

Since its passage in March 2010, the law has been one of the most significant and controversial changes to American social policy since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s. The law, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, has implications that reach far beyond the health care industry. The discussion will explain the basic components of the law and will explore how the law will affect the uninsured, college students and others.
