Leading Expert to Discuss Cyber Security

Eugene Spafford, a leading expert on cyber security, will present a talk on Monday, April 25, titled “Some Musings on Cyber Security by a Cyber Iconoclast.” The lecture, which will begin at from 1:30 to in Bucknall Hall 120, is part the Alvine Engineering Professional Effectiveness and Enrichment Lecture Series. The presentation will provide a summary of the current security situation and how we got to it, as well as offer insights into biases that continue to shape how we approach cyber security. RSVP>>

Spafford, who in 1989 wrote the first book in English about computer viruses and malware, is a professor of computer science at Purdue University. He is a member of the Cyber Security Hall of Fame and is the founder and executive director of the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security. 

Spafford and his students are credited with a number of security "firsts," including the first open security scanner, the first widely available intrusion detection tool, the first integrity-based control tool, the first multistage firewall, the first formal bounds on intrusion detection, the first reference model of firewalls, and some of the first work in vulnerability classification databases.
